Vietnam in November: Weather, Where to Go and Is It a Good Time?

November is a quietly brilliant time to travel in Vietnam. The summer rains have cleared across most of the country, the air in the north turns cool and crisp, and the long dry season settles over the south. It is a shoulder month, which means good weather without the crowds and higher prices of the winter peak that follows.
The one thing to watch is the central coast, which can still catch rain and the tail of the storm season in the first week or two. Plan the route around that and November rewards you with some of the clearest skies of the year. Here is how the month looks region by region, and how we would shape a trip around it.
Vietnam in November at a glance
Vietnam is long and narrow, so it never has one single climate. In November the north is cool and dry, the centre is drying out after its wet autumn, and the south is warm and dry. For most travellers that makes November one of the easiest months to combine Hanoi and the north with a few days of beach or city time in the south.
The north in November: Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Long Bay
The north is at its best. Hanoi is cool and pleasant, usually in the high teens to low twenties Celsius, with dry, bright days that are ideal for walking the Old Quarter. Up in Sapa the rice has been harvested and the air is cold and clear, with long views over the valleys on a good day. Pack layers for the mountains, where evenings drop close to single figures.
Out on the water, November is a lovely time for a Ha Long Bay tour. The sea is calm, the humidity has gone and the karsts stand out sharply against clear skies, a world away from the summer haze. If a cruise is on your list, this is one of the better months to take one, so it is worth looking at the overnight cruises early as the good boats fill up as winter approaches.

The centre is the one region that asks for a little care. Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue sit in a weather band that runs wet through October and into early November, and the rivers around Hoi An can rise after heavy rain. By the second half of the month things usually settle and the drier, cooler season begins.
If your heart is set on the central coast, aim for late November rather than the first week, and keep the plan flexible. We watch the forecasts closely for trips in this window and shift the order of a route if a wet spell is coming, which is far easier to do when the whole trip is being run for you day by day.
The south in November: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong and the islands
The south is reliably good. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and the beaches are into the dry season, with warm, sunny days and low rainfall. It is a fine time for a city tour, a run through the Mekong Delta or a few days of sun on Phu Quoc, where the sea is calm and the sunsets are long.
This is what makes November such a flexible month. You can have cool, clear northern days and warm southern beaches in the same two-week trip, which is harder to pull off in the depths of winter or the height of summer.
Crowds, prices and booking ahead
November sits in the shoulder season. The big international crowds build from December through to after Tet, so travelling now means quieter sights and better value on hotels, while the weather is still excellent. The exception is the overnight cruises and the better small hotels, which book up well in advance for the dry months, so it pays to settle those early even if the rest of the trip stays loose. If budget is on your mind, our guide to how much a trip to Vietnam costs breaks down what to expect.
What to pack for Vietnam in November
The short answer is layers. In the north you will want a light jacket or jumper for the evenings and something warmer for Sapa, while the days are mild enough for shirtsleeves. In the south, pack as you would for summer, with light clothes, sun cream and a hat. A compact rain jacket is still worth having for the central coast early in the month. Our full Vietnam packing guide goes through it in detail, and the month-by-month weather guide is handy if your dates are flexible.
A fortnight in Vietnam in November
If you have around two weeks, November lets you string the whole country together. A popular shape is a few days in Hanoi and the north, two days on a Ha Long Bay cruise while the water is calm, then a flight south to the drier central coast for Hoi An in the latter part of the month, and on to the southern beaches to finish in the sun. It is the kind of route that is easy in November and awkward in the wetter months, and we build it around your exact dates. Our fourteen-day itinerary is a good template to start from.
So, is November a good time to visit Vietnam?
Yes, for most trips November is one of the best months of the year. If your plan leans on the north and the south, the weather is close to ideal and the shoulder-season quiet is a real bonus. The only reason to pause is a trip built around the central coast in the first week or two, and even then a flexible, well-timed route usually works out well. If you are weighing up your dates, our guide to the best time to visit Ha Long Bay and the honest look at Ha Long Bay in October are useful comparisons for the shoulder months on either side.
How we plan a November trip in Vietnam
We are planners, not resellers, and we never take commission, so the advice you get is about the trip rather than a sale. For a November trip that means pointing you to the regions that are at their best, keeping the central coast flexible, and locking in the cruise and the key hotels early while leaving room to move. We run the whole thing for you, arrival to departure, with an English-speaking team on hand throughout, and we are rated five-star on Tripadvisor. A good starting point is one of our ready-made itineraries, which we then tailor to your dates. Tell us when you are coming and we will build it around you.
