Vietnam in December: Weather, Festive Season and Where to Go

Vietnam in December: Weather, Festive Season and Where to Go
In short: December is a good time to visit Vietnam, and the south is at its best. The southern beaches and cities are warm and dry, the central coast has usually cleared, and the north is cold but bright, with Sapa genuinely chilly. It is the start of the winter peak, with festive cities over Christmas and New Year, so it is busier and the better hotels and cruises book up early.

December is one of the most popular months to visit Vietnam, and for good reason. The south is deep into its dry season with warm, sunny days, the central coast has usually shaken off its autumn rain, and the north turns cold, bright and atmospheric. Add the festive feel in the cities over Christmas and New Year and it is an easy month to enjoy, as long as you pack for the cooler north and book the key pieces early.

It is also the start of the winter peak, so December is busier and in higher demand than the shoulder months either side. Here is how the month looks region by region, what the festive season is really like, and how we would shape a trip around it.

Vietnam in December at a glance

The headline is a split between a cold, dry north and a warm, dry south, with the central coast sitting comfortably in between by this point in the year. For most travellers that makes December a strong month for a southern or beach-led trip, and a fine one for the north too if you come prepared for the cold.

The north in December: Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Long Bay

The north is cold. Hanoi sits in the low to mid teens Celsius through much of December, dry but sometimes grey, and pleasant for walking if you have a warm layer. Up in Sapa it is genuinely chilly, often close to freezing at night, and the highest peaks such as Fansipan can see frost and, in rare years, a dusting of snow. The mountains are quiet and clear on a good day, but this is a trip for warm clothes.

Out on the bay, a Ha Long Bay cruise in December trades summer warmth for crisp air, fewer crowds and often beautifully clear light, though some mornings can be misty. It is still a lovely time to be on the water, and the overnight boats are in high demand over the holidays, so book early if your dates fall near Christmas or New Year.

The central coast in December: Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue

By December the central coast has usually turned the corner. The heavy autumn rain has eased, the days are cooler and more settled, and Hoi An is a pleasure to wander, with the lanterns glowing against darker winter evenings. It is not beach weather on the central coast, as the sea is still cool and the odd wet day can pass through, but for sightseeing and food it is a good time to be there.

The south in December: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong and the islands

The south is the star of the month. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and the islands are in the heart of the dry season, with warm, sunny days and very little rain. It is the best time of year for the beaches, so a few days on Phu Quoc to finish a trip are hard to beat, and a city tour in the cooler, drier air is easy going.

Christmas and New Year in Vietnam

Vietnam is not a traditionally Christian country, but the cities embrace the festive season with real enthusiasm. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi fill with lights and decorations, shopping streets and hotels put on a show, and Christmas Eve is a lively night out rather than a quiet family affair. New Year is celebrated too, with countdown events and fireworks in the big cities, while Phu Quoc and the southern beaches are a warm, sunny spot to see the year in. Do note that this is the Western calendar New Year, not the Vietnamese Tet, which falls later and is covered in our Vietnam in February guide.

Peak season: crowds, prices and booking early

December is the start of the high season, and the two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest of all. The better hotels, the good cruises and the popular restaurants fill up well ahead, and prices are at their highest over the holidays. None of that spoils the trip, but it does mean the key pieces need settling early rather than left to chance. Our guide to how much a trip to Vietnam costs gives you a feel for what to budget.

What to pack for Vietnam in December

Pack for two climates. For the north you will want proper warm layers, a jacket and something cosy for Sapa, where it can be close to freezing. For the south, pack light summer clothes, sun cream and swimwear for the beaches. A small umbrella is handy for the odd grey day in the north or centre. Our full Vietnam packing guide covers it, and the month-by-month weather guide helps if your dates can flex.

A fortnight in Vietnam in December

With around two weeks, a December trip often works best weighted towards the south and the festive cities. A popular shape is Hanoi and a Ha Long Bay cruise with warm layers, then south to Hoi An for the lanterns, on to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong, and finishing with sun on Phu Quoc over New Year. It is a route that makes the most of the weather and the season, and we build it around your exact dates. Our fourteen-day itinerary is a good template to adapt.

So, is December a good time to visit Vietnam?

Yes, especially if your trip leans south or towards the beaches, and if you like the idea of festive cities over Christmas and New Year. The north is cold but bright and atmospheric, so it is still well worth including as long as you pack for it. The main things to plan around are the peak-season crowds and prices over the holidays, which reward booking early. How we plan a December trip in Vietnam

We are planners, not resellers, and we never take commission, so our advice is about your trip rather than a sale. For December that means weighting the route towards the regions at their best, making sure you are packed for the cold north, and locking in the cruise, the festive-period hotels and any New Year plans early while the good options are still open. We run the whole trip for you, arrival to departure, with an English-speaking team on hand throughout, and we are rated five-star on Tripadvisor. Tell us your dates and we will build it around you.
