October and November, the sweet spot

December to February, cool, quiet and misty

Winter is cool, sometimes cold, and often draped in a soft mist that can be atmospheric or, on a grey day, flatten the views. Crowds thin and prices ease. It is too cool for most people to swim, but quiet water and fewer boats have their own appeal. Occasional heavy fog can shorten or reroute a sailing.

March to May, warming up

June to August, hot, green and best for swimming

High summer is hot and humid, and the sea is at its warmest, the best months for swimming and kayaking, and popular with families and Vietnamese holidaymakers, so July in particular is busy. The trade-off is the weather: this is the wettest stretch, and the season when tropical storms can roll in. Cruises are sometimes delayed or cancelled when the authorities close the bay for a storm, not common, but worth building a little flexibility around.

September, the turn of the season

September is the turn of the year. Early in the month there can still be storm risk; by late September the humidity eases and the clear autumn light begins, often with fewer crowds than October. A quietly good time if the weather cooperates.

The busiest, priciest windows are the autumn sweet spot (October and November) and the domestic summer holidays (roughly June and July).
