The main strip
The long west-coast beach, lined with resorts, bars and restaurants, and the place to be for sunsets. Walkable and sociable, it suits first-time visitors and anyone who likes life on the doorstep.
Quiet and natural
A string of coves just north of Long Beach, greener and calmer, with smaller resorts set among the trees. For couples and anyone after a slower, more private stretch of sand.
The far south
The developed south around An Thoi, home to the Hon Thom cable car and the pastel Sunset Town. Handy for island-hopping boats and families who want plenty close at hand.
Soft white sand
A quieter beach on the south-east coast, known for powder-soft sand and shallow, clear water. Lovely by day and calmer after dark, so it pairs well with a car or a longer stay.
The island town
The island's main town, home to the night market, harbour and most of its restaurants. Central and walkable rather than beachfront, it suits travellers who want the market and local life on the doorstep.
The far north
The undeveloped north-west coast, where the large integrated resorts and the VinWonders and Grand World complex sit. It suits families who want an all-in-one resort with plenty on site.
Most travellers reach Phu Quoc by a short flight from Ho Chi Minh City and give it three or four nights as a restful finish before flying home.
2 to 3 nights
Enough to unwind on the sand, take one island-hopping boat trip and watch a couple of sunsets. The right length if Phu Quoc is a brief coda to a busier trip.
3 to 4 nights
Our usual suggestion. Time to mix beach days with the cable car, the night market and a quieter beach or two, without ever feeling you are rushing.
A week
For a pure beach holiday, or the slow end of a longer journey. Settle into one resort and let the days blur pleasantly together.
Long Beach is the easiest choice for a first visit, central and walkable to bars and restaurants, and good for sunsets. Ong Lang is quieter and more natural, the far south around Sunset Town suits families and island-hoppers, and Bai Sao is the one to pick for soft sand. We match the area to how you like to travel.
Three to four nights is ideal for a restful finish, mixing beach days with an island-hopping trip and the cable car. Two nights works as a short beach break, while a week suits anyone after a pure resort holiday at the end of their travels.
If you want to end a Vietnam trip by the sea, yes. Phu Quoc has genuinely soft sand and warm, clear water, good seafood and easy island trips, and its own airport makes it simple to reach. Seek out the quieter south and the offshore islands for the island at its calmest.
November to April is the dry season and the time to aim for, with sunny skies and calm, clear water. May to October is greener but wetter, with afternoon downpours and rougher seas, though mornings can still be fine.
The easiest way is to fly. Phu Quoc has an international airport with direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and a growing list of overseas cities, so most travellers add it to the end of a trip with a short hop from the mainland.
