The Best Time to Visit Vietnam

It is the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is that Vietnam does not have one best time. The country stretches more than 1,600 kilometres from the mountains of the far north to the beaches of the far south, which means it holds three different climates at once. When the north is cold and misty, the south is warm and dry. When the central coast is being soaked, the north can be at its finest.
So the real question is not when is the best time to visit Vietnam, but when is the best time for your Vietnam, given where you want to go and what you want to do. This guide walks through the weather region by region, gives you a month-by-month view, and points to the best times for the trips people most often take. If you would rather skip the homework, that is what we are here for.
Why Vietnam has no single best season
Vietnam has three broad climate zones. The north has a proper four-season feel, with a hot, wet summer and a cool, drier winter. The central coast runs on its own calendar, dry and very hot from around February to August and wet from September into December, with the storm season landing in the autumn. The south is tropical and simple, with just two seasons: a dry one from about November to April and a wet one from May to October. No single month is ideal everywhere at once, which is exactly why the route matters as much as the month.
The best time to visit the north: Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Long Bay
For the north, think October to April. These are the cool, drier months, when Hanoi is comfortable for walking, the mountains around Sapa are crisp and clear, and the sea on Ha Long Bay is calm. December and January are the coldest, and Sapa can be genuinely chilly, while March and April warm up nicely before the summer humidity arrives. Our guide to the best time to visit Ha Long Bay goes deeper on the bay itself, which is lovely on a clear autumn or spring day and still worth it, if colder, in winter.
The best time to visit central Vietnam: Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue
The centre is the region to plan carefully. February to August is dry and sunny, which is the window for the beaches at Da Nang and for wandering Hoi An without an umbrella. The flip side is that midsummer can be very hot. From September into December the central coast turns wet, and the rivers around Hoi An can rise after heavy rain, so this is the part of the country most worth timing well. By late December things settle and the cooler, drier season begins again.

The south is the easiest to read. The dry season runs from about November to April, with warm, sunny days and low rainfall, which is the best stretch for Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and the beaches of Phu Quoc. The wet season, May to October, brings short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, so the south is still very doable in summer, you just plan around the showers. Our south Vietnam itinerary is built for the dry months.
Vietnam month by month, at a glance
Here is the quick version, with links to our fuller month guides where we have them.
January: cool and dry in the north, warm and dry in the south, a good all-round month if you pack for the cold up north. February: similar, and often when Tet falls, which is worth planning around, see our Vietnam in February guide. March and April: arguably the sweet spot, dry and pleasant almost everywhere, with the late-April holiday to note. May to August: hot, with summer rain building in the north and south but the central coast at its driest. September to early November: the central coast is wettest and the storm season peaks, though the north and south are improving. October: the north is lovely, see Ha Long Bay in October. November and December: two of the best months for a north-and-south trip, covered in Vietnam in November and Vietnam in December. For the full detail, our month-by-month weather guide breaks down every region.
The best time for the trip you have in mind
Often the deciding factor is what you want to do rather than the calendar. For a Ha Long Bay cruise, the clear, calm days of October to April are the pick, with autumn and spring the most comfortable. For trekking in Sapa, September and October show the rice terraces at their golden best, while March to May is green and mild. For the southern beaches, November to April is the dry-season window. And if you want to experience Tet, the Vietnamese New Year in late January or February, that is a special but busy time when much of the country slows down for a few days.
When to think twice
A few windows call for a little care rather than avoidance. The central coast from September to November can see heavy rain and the odd storm, so we keep those routes flexible. Tet brings closures and higher demand across the whole country for several days. And the stretch from Christmas through to after Tet is the busy, pricier peak, so the better cruises and hotels book up well ahead. None of these are reasons to stay away, just things to plan around, which is far easier when the whole trip is being run for you.
The cheapest and quietest times to visit Vietnam
The shoulder seasons give you the best value and the fewest crowds. Late spring, roughly April to early June, and the autumn, around September to early November, sit between the peaks, with good weather in most regions and quieter sights. Travelling outside the Christmas-to-Tet peak means better availability and more relaxed pricing, while the weather is often still excellent. So, when should you go to Vietnam?
If you want one simple answer, aim for March to April or October to December, when the weather is kind across most of the country and a north-and-south trip works well. If your heart is set on one region, follow its season: October to April for the north, February to August for the central beaches, November to April for the south. And if your dates are already fixed, there is almost always a good version of Vietnam to be had in any month, as long as the route is built around the weather. Not sure how long to give it either? Our guide to how many days you need in Vietnam helps.
How we plan a trip around the best time
We are planners, not resellers, and we never take commission, so the advice you get is about the trip rather than a sale. We take your dates and your must-dos and shape the route so you are in each region at a good time, keeping the central coast flexible, timing the cruise for calm water, and booking the key pieces early in peak months while leaving room to move. We run the whole thing for you, arrival to departure, with an English-speaking team on hand throughout, and we are rated five-star on Tripadvisor. A good starting point is our fourteen-day itinerary, which we then tailor to when you are coming. Tell us your dates and we will build the best version of the trip around them.
Common questions
What is the best month to visit Vietnam?
March, April, October and November are among the best all-round months, as the weather is dry and pleasant across most of the country. There is no single ideal month everywhere at once, because the north, centre and south have different climates, so the best month depends on your route.
When is the best time to visit Vietnam for good weather everywhere?
The closest the whole country comes to good weather at the same time is roughly March to April and, to a slightly lesser extent, late October to December. Even then the central coast can be the exception, so a well-timed route still matters more than picking one month.
When is the rainy season in Vietnam?
It varies by region. The north and south are wettest in summer, from about May to October, with the south seeing short afternoon downpours. The central coast is different, staying dry until around September and then turning wet from September into December, which is also the storm season.
When is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay?
October to April is the pick for Ha Long Bay, with the clear, calm, cooler days of autumn and spring the most comfortable for a cruise. Summer is warm but can be humid and stormy, and winter is cold but quiet and often beautifully clear.
When is the cheapest time to visit Vietnam?
The shoulder seasons, roughly April to early June and September to early November, tend to offer the best value and the fewest crowds, with good weather in most regions. The busiest and priciest stretch is Christmas through to after Tet.
Is it worth visiting Vietnam during Tet?
Tet, the Vietnamese New Year in late January or February, is a special time to see the country celebrate, but much of it slows down for a few days as businesses close and families travel home. It is worth it if you plan carefully around the dates, which our Vietnam in February guide covers.
