The Itinerary

Day 1
Hanoi → Ha Long → Lan Ha Bay → Bright Cave & Frog Lagoon
08:30Limousine pick-up from the Hanoi Old Quarter or Opera House, with a short rest stop on the ~2.5-hour drive to Ha Long.
11:30Arrive at the Scarlet Pearl lounge in Ha Long International Cruise Port. Welcome drink, briefing and check-in.
13:00Lunch at the Tahiti Restaurant as the cruise sails across primitive Lan Ha Bay.
15:00Reach Sáng (Bright) Cave by kayak or rowing boat, then kayak and swim in the secluded Ếch (Frog) Lagoon, one of the bay's most remote corners.
17:00Return to the cruise; sundeck sunset, sunset party or cooking class, and happy hour from 17:30.
19:00Fine-dining dinner with an interactive cultural exchange. Overnight on board.
Day 2
Ba Trai Dao Beach & Viet Hai Village (Cat Ba) by catamaran
06:30Sunrise Tai Chi on the sundeck; light breakfast follows.
09:00Transfer to a catamaran and cruise to Ba Trai Dao (Three Peach) Beach, white sand and clear water deep within Lan Ha Bay.
10:00Visit Viet Hai Village on Cat Ba Island; a bicycle (or electric-car) tour through the national park to a valley hamlet and a traditional house.
12:30Lunch back on board as the cruise repositions; afternoon free for swimming, the spa or the sundeck.
17:30Cooking demonstration or happy hour as the bay turns golden.
19:00Dinner on board, then squid fishing or live music. Overnight on board.
Day 3
Tai Chi → Dark & Bright Cave → Brunch → Hanoi
06:30Morning yoga or Tai Chi on the sundeck with the sunrise; light breakfast of tea, coffee and pastries.
07:30Visit the Dark & Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat, a serene round lake enclosed by stone walls.
09:00Return to the ship and check out.
09:30Brunch on board as the Scarlet Pearl returns to harbour.
11:30Disembark and transfer back to Hanoi, arriving mid-afternoon. End of trip.

Our experience of

Scarlet Pearl Cruise

We've hosted guests aboard the Scarlet Pearl and been over her ourselves. She's a smaller boat on the quieter Lan Ha Bay, and that shapes the whole trip - beautifully designed cabins with big windows, a relaxed feel and none of the queueing you get on the larger ships.

The crew get named in reviews, always with a smile, and guests describe waking up to a wall of limestone islands as unforgettable. Days bring a village visit, the water slide, swimming straight off the boat and kayaking on glass-flat water, and the dining is a step up from standard Halong fare. One honest note we pass on: drinks are charged separately and aren't cheap, so budget for those.

What we've found: the Scarlet Pearl suits couples and small groups who want a calm, well-designed boat on the quiet bay, happy to trade a bigger ship for fewer crowds.
