Where to Stay in Da Nang: Beach, City, or Resort?

Da Nang has gone from overlooked transit stop to one of Vietnam's most-liked city breaks in a few short years — a long sweep of sandy beach on one side, a river threaded with lit-up bridges on the other, and an airport more or less in the middle of it all. That central airport is part of the appeal: wherever you stay, you are rarely more than fifteen minutes from your bed. What changes with the area you pick is the balance of beach, buzz and quiet.

My Khe and My An Beach

If you have come for the sea, this is the obvious base. My Khe is the long, wide beach that made Da Nang's name, backed by a growing line of hotels, rooftop bars and cafés, with My An just behind it. It suits first-time visitors and beach lovers who want to swim before breakfast and still be a short ride from the city. Rooms run from simple budget hotels to smart beachfront towers, and even the higher floors of mid-range places tend to come with a sea view. The water is at its calmest and warmest from around May to August, and turns rougher in the wetter months from October.

An Thuong — the Western quarter

Just inland from My An, An Thuong is Da Nang's walkable pocket of small restaurants, coffee shops, craft-beer bars and spas — the area most travellers gravitate to in the evenings. It is a short stroll to the beach, easy on the budget, and lively without being overwhelming. A good pick if you want to eat and drink your way around on foot and keep the sand close.

The city centre and Han riverfront

Across on the river, the centre is the urban heart: Han Market, the famous Dragon Bridge that breathes fire at weekends, and a run of riverside hotels from budget to upmarket. You trade a beachfront doorstep for city convenience — restaurants, transport and nightlife on tap, with the sand a five-to-ten-minute ride away. It suits travellers who want the buzz of a city and are happy to hop over to the beach when the mood takes them.

Son Tra Peninsula

North of the beach, the forested Son Tra peninsula — home to the Lady Buddha statue and a troop of rare langurs — is where the quiet, higher-end resorts hide. This is the choice for seclusion: sweeping views, calm, and space away from the city, with the trade-off that you will rely on taxis to get into town. Best for couples and anyone whose idea of a good day is a pool, a view and no rush.

Non Nuoc and the Marble Mountains end

South towards the Marble Mountains, the coast is lined with the big international beach resorts — the kind with pools, kids' clubs and everything on site. It is less about wandering out for dinner and more about settling in, which makes it a natural fit for families and for a resort-style few days. It is also the closest stretch to Hoi An, half an hour or so down the coast, if you want to pair the two.

So where should you actually stay?

For a first visit, base yourself on My Khe beach and enjoy having sea and city both close. If you want to be out among the bars and cafés on foot, choose An Thuong. If it is the city buzz and the bridges you are after, stay on the Han riverfront. For quiet and a view, look to Son Tra; and for a pool-and-space family holiday, the Non Nuoc resort strip is hard to beat.

How Da Nang fits a wider Vietnam trip

Da Nang is the gateway to central Vietnam, so it usually anchors the middle of a north-to-south route — most people pair it with Hoi An, half an hour down the coast, staying in one and day-tripping to the other, or splitting their nights between the two. From here the Marble Mountains, the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills and the old imperial city of Hue are all easy days out, and the central airport makes it a natural arrival or departure point.
