The Hotel

Mekong Lodge is a small riverside resort at Cai Be in the Mekong Delta, about 120 km south-west of Ho Chi Minh City. Its 26 bungalows are built as single-storey garden cottages among fruit trees on the bank of the Tien River, 12 of them with private plunge pools. There is a shared pool with a children's section, a restaurant, free bicycles and boat and cooking activities. It suits couples and families who want one or two quiet nights in the Delta rather than a day trip.

What guests say

Guests come for the garden and the welcome - bungalows scattered through fruit trees and flowers on the bank of the Tien River, a big pool for the heat of the day, and staff who are consistently described as warm. The boat trips to the canals and floating market, the cooking classes and the fish at the restaurant are all part of why people stay two nights.

Getting about: the lodge is on an island in the river, so everything is by boat or bicycle - free bikes for the orchard lanes, boats to Cai Be, and organised transfers from Saigon of about two and a half hours, which some find pricey.

What room types does Mekong Lodge have?

There are three categories. Superior rooms have a double or twin bed and a garden view with an outdoor shower terrace. Deluxe rooms are around 40m² with a private terrace and come as double, twin or triple. Suite rooms are 55m² with a private plunge pool, a bathtub and garden or river views, also in double, twin or triple layout.

Where is the lodge and what is within walking distance?

The lodge is on the Tien River at Dong Hoa Hiep, Cai Be, and is reached by boat. Around it are orchards, village lanes and small hamlets that you can explore by bicycle. Cai Be town and its floating market are a short boat ride away.

Is breakfast included?

Yes, a daily buffet breakfast is included with every room. It is served in the lodge restaurant, which also does lunch and dinner with Vietnamese and some Western dishes.

What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by 12 noon. The lodge's boat shuttle from the pier runs for arrivals and departures.

Is it suitable for families?

Yes. Deluxe and Suite rooms come in triple layouts, there is a children's pool beside the main pool, and free bicycles, boat trips and cooking demonstrations keep children occupied. The bungalows are single storey with garden terraces.

How do I get there and how long does it take?

From Ho Chi Minh City it is about 120 km by road to Cai Be, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car. From the pier the lodge's boat takes about 10 minutes. Few Days includes the transfer in most Delta itineraries, and Can Tho is about 80 km further on.
