Cat Ba is the largest island in the Ha Long archipelago, the gateway to Lan Ha Bay and the one place where you can sleep on land among the limestone rather than on a boat. Where you stay sets the tone, from the harbour front with its seafood restaurants to a beach cove or a village reached by boat.
The island splits into a handful of distinct areas, and parts of it are still being built. Below is how we choose between them, how many nights to give Cat Ba, and the questions we are asked most. Any stay pairs with our Lan Ha Bay cruises.

The harbour front
The island's one real town, wrapped around a harbour lined with hotels, seafood restaurants and the piers for Lan Ha Bay boats. Central and walkable, it suits first-time visitors and anyone who wants boats, meals and the beaches within easy reach.
The beaches
Three small coves a few minutes from town, joined by a cliff-side path, with Cat Co 2 the calmest of the three. For anyone who wants sand on the doorstep with the town's restaurants ten minutes away.
Out on the water
Not a hotel at all but a cabin on a small cruise boat, anchored among limestone islands, floating villages and beaches with nobody on them. For couples and anyone whose first reason for coming is the bay itself.
The quiet village
A farming village inside the national park, reached by boat and a short cycle from its jetty, with simple homestays and garden bungalows. For walkers and anyone after rice fields and silence rather than the sea.
The forest interior
The wooded centre of the island, around fifteen kilometres from town, with the park trails, Hospital Cave and a few small eco-stays in the villages nearby. For birdwatchers and hikers, and a good pairing with a night in town.
Most travellers reach Cat Ba from Hanoi in three to four hours by road and ferry, or on a Lan Ha Bay cruise, and give the island one or two nights.
1 night
Arrive by late morning, spend the afternoon on a boat in Lan Ha Bay, eat seafood on the harbour front and leave after breakfast. Enough for a taste, and the way many travellers combine the island with a cruise.
2 nights
A full day on the water with kayaking and a swim, then a second for the beaches, the national park or a boat and cycle out to Viet Hai, with a proper evening in town between them.
3 nights or more
Split the stay between a night on a boat in Lan Ha Bay and two on land, or keep one hotel and go slowly: a kayak morning, a forest walk, a rest day on Cat Co 2 and the harbour to come back to.
Cat Ba town is the easy choice for a first visit, with the boats, restaurants and beaches all within a short walk or ride. The Cat Co coves put sand on the doorstep, Viet Hai village is the one to pick for quiet and rice fields, and if the bay is your main reason for coming, a night aboard a Lan Ha Bay boat beats any hotel. We match the area to how you like to travel.
Two nights is the right length for most people: one day on Lan Ha Bay and one for the island itself. One night works if you are combining Cat Ba with a cruise, while three or more lets you split the stay between a boat and a hotel and take the beaches slowly.
By road along the Hanoi-Hai Phong expressway and over the sea bridge to Cat Hai, where a short ferry crossing or the cable car reaches the north of the island, then around forty minutes across to Cat Ba town. Allow three to four hours door to door. From Ha Long, a ferry runs from Tuan Chau to Gia Luan on the island's north coast. Many of our guests arrive on a Lan Ha Bay cruise instead and step off at the island.
Yes. Day trips from Hanoi spend most of their hours in transit and see the harbour at its busiest. Stay a night and you get the bay in the early light, the beaches after the tour boats have gone and a seafood dinner on the water. Be aware that the island is mid-way through a building programme, so ask us which hotels sit away from the works.
It is, and easier than a cruise for younger children. The Cat Co beaches are sheltered and shallow, kayaking on Lan Ha Bay is calm, Hospital Cave and the cycle through Viet Hai suit school-age children, and the town has plenty of simple places to eat. We keep boat days short and build in beach afternoons.
April to June and September to November are the months to aim for, warm and settled with calm water in the bay. July and August are hot, busy with Vietnamese holidaymakers and prone to summer storms. December to February is cool and often misty, too cold to swim for most, but the island and the bay are at their quietest.
